The USS Monitor was the first of a series of over 30 turreted ironclad ships to be built for the Union Navy. She was built in an astounding 94 working days and rushed unproven into service in time to meet the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia in the famous Battle of Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862. She foundered off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on December 31st of that year taking 16 of her crew down with her. Specifications: Length-172’, Beam-41’, Draft-10’ 5”, Tonnage-987t, Speed-8 kts, Crew 59, Armor-8” Turret, 5”Sides, 1” Deck, 9”Pilot House, Armament- Two XI in Dahlgren smoothbores. Built-Greenpoint, NY. Launched 10 Jan 1862. The Model: 1/32 Scale, 5’ 5” long. Built from original blueprints furnished by the Mariners Museum, Newport News, VA. It features such detail as the correct number and pattern of the bolt heads on the turret, the nine dents on her turret and other repaired battle damage incurred during her first battle, and crewmembers in appropriate uniform. She is in the configuration of performing “River Duty” on the James River which she stood from May to December of 1862.
